Glossary: Gold Cosmetica

acrylic lacquer: A solvent-based clear coating for manicures and pedicures. Can be used as the adhesive for the 23kt Gold Leaf for Nail Care, as well as a protective coating.
alloy: A combination of metals producing specific attributes of color, malleabillity, weight, tarnish-resistance and strength. Alloys are used to create many colors of gold leaf, flakes and powders.
adhesive: Used to attach or adhere gold leaves to the nail's surface during manicure or pedicure. An acrylic nail lacquer is an appropriate adhesive for 23kt Gold Leaf.
aluminium leaf: Available through Eytzinger's Crocodile and GoldCreative lines for art, architecture and craft projects. A thin leaf for gilding made from Aluminium metal, also called imitation silver.
analysis certificate: The result of testing by independent third party to determine the quality in gold leaf and silver leaf, powders, flakes, MicroMesh products and manufacture. All gold and silver products undergoing this analysis are annually confirmed by GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certificate. anneal A process of gradual heating and cooling to increase malleability of gold leaf in the early stages of the goldbeating process.
batch number: The reference number of all gold leaf and silver leaf, powder,flakes, and MicroMesh production process. This number allows us to trace each individual step of production, enabling stringent quality control. batch size Each gold leaf and silver leaf product is made in specific quantities that allow us to carefully scrutinize each step of production.
body treatment: Specialty luxury treatments enhanced by the topical skin application of GoldCosmetica certified 24k Fine Gold Leaf, dimensions 50mm x 50mm (2"). We also offer sizes: 90x 90 mm, 100 x 100 mm, 110 x 110 mm, and custom sizes as well.
books: 24kt Fine Gold for Facial & Body Treatment and 23kt Manicure & Pedicure come in packs of 10 books or booklets each containing 12 leaves. customized packaging solutions on request.
CAS: The Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) provides chemical substance information. The CAS Registry assigns substances a unique identifying number. GoldCosmetica genuine gold leaf and silver leaf products are each assigned their own CAS Registry Number.
composition leaf: Available through Eytzinger's Crocodile and GoldCreative lines for art, architecture and craft projects. Non-precious leaf also called "Dutch" Metal, Imitation Leaf and Brass or Bronze Leaf. Not recommended as is not tested for topical use and may cause allergies.
copper leaf: Available through Eytzinger's Crocodile and GoldCreative lines for art, architecture and craft projects; a non-precious leaf made with copper.
cosmetic gold: Genuine gold leaf of varying karats and colors, along with genuine silver leaf are especially produced by GoldCosmetica for spa and beauty professionals. All GoldComestica gold leaf, flakes powder, MiroMesh are made with strict adherence to several national and international guidelines. Please see human patch test, certificate of analysis, INCI, GMP.
cosmetic tissue: Pliable carrier paper to which GoldCosmetica 24kt Fine Gold (Facial Teatment) and 23 Kt Gold (Manicure) is adhered. This paper makes it easy to apply genuine gold leaf during a body treatment or nail treatment.
Crocodile Brand: The trademark of J.G. Eytzinger GmbH since 1867 for its family of genuine gold leaf, silver leaf and metal leaf products. Today, nearly all goldbeaters have been superceded by computer-based machine beating hammers. J.G. Eytzinger still applies the same stringent oversight of gold leaf manufacture. goldbeating: This exacting profession, once done always by hand, is now carried on by J.G. Eytzinger GmbH in its state-of-the-art facilities. initially, annealing (gradual heating and cooling) increases malleability of gold leaf in the early stages of the process. Actual beating is accomplished by computer-run hammer carousels. The individual is still very much evident: all steps of Crocodile genuine gold leaf production from melting, beating, cutting, shaping and packing are carefully scrutinized by staff, and assigned batch numbers.

gold leaf: Thinly beaten leaf made of 24kt gold, silver and other metal alloys. Created especially for facial and body treatments, 24kt Fine Gold is unalloyed pure gold. 23kt gold leaf is designed for manicure and pedicure applications. Please also see flakes and powders.
gold leaf colors: GoldCosmetica 24kt Fine Gold is a rich, unalloyed classic color. 23kt gold leaf for manicure and pedicure is a slightly lighter color, due to the small amount of silver present. GoldCosmetica Essentials Flakes and Powders are produced in a variety of shades and alloys: Silver 999, White Gold 500, Light Yellow 834, Tawny Gold 889, Deep Gold 955, Warm Gold 975 and Dark Gold 985.

gold size: Term for adhesives for gilding. Please see adhesives, glue.
gram weight: Indicates the amount of 24k Fine Gold in 1,000 stacked leaves of a particular karat, without any packaging. This information is helpful to identify the suitability of a particular karat for an application. Lesser gram weights are often used in reverse glass gilding and certain water gilding finishes that will be decoratively abraded or rubbed back. Heavier gram weights are often used in religious projects, illuminations and exterior gilding situations.
halal: The term used in the Islamic community to mean lawful or permitted. GoldGourmet products are certifiied halal.
heavy metals: A subset of metals that are unhealthy in certain quantities. GoldCosmetica genuine gold and silver leaf products are tested and shown to be under these limits as defined by cosmetic regulations.
human patch test: Analysis performed by applying a gold leaf or silver leaf product to a person's skin, and left on for 48 hours. Testing by SGS Institut Fresenius laboratory has shown GoldCosmetica products to be "harmless" when used as part of a professionally applied topical treatment.
Imitation gold leaf: Available through Eytzinger/Crocodile and GoldCreative lines for art, architecture and craft projects. Non-precious metal leaf is made with varying alloys of copper and zinc, to produce varying gold shades; called "Dutch" Metal, Imitation Leaf and Brass or Bronze Leaf. Not recommended for topical uses as it is not tested and may cause allergies.

INCI: International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients - INCO labeling is important for consumer safey, providing standardized names for all ingredients in cosmetic products. By mandating the listing of these ingredients on each product, INCI enables the consumer to identify possible allergens. Goldcosmetica products follow INCO guidelines and have assigned INCO names.

karat: The measurement of purity of gold alloys, where one karat equals 1/24 purity by mass. In gold leaf terminology, 24kt refers to 100% genuine Fine Gold.
kosher: The term used ito indicate adherence to dietary laws within the Jewish community. GoldGourmet products are certifiied kosher.
MSDS: Material Safety Data Sheets are available for all our genuine gold leaf and silver leaf products.
mesh size: Refers to the number of openings in mesh through which a powder may pass. The particle size of powder is in inverse proportion to the mesh size.
metal leaf: Available through Eytzinger's Crocodile and GoldCreative lines for art, architecture and craft projects. Refers to composition leaf, variegated leaf, aluminum leaf, or copper leaf.
micron: Unit of metric measurement, one millionth of a meter, or 1/125 inch. 24kt Fine Gold Leaf and 23kt Gold Leaf are beaten to a thicknessof 0.0001mm or 1/10 of one micron.
MicroMesh: One of many specialty genuine gold products made by GoldCosmetica. Irregular sized leaves with a diameter of approximately 130 mm (5.1").
nail treatment: Manicure or pedicure using specially packaged GoldCosmetica 23k gold leaf.
pack: Refers to a package or box of leaf containing smaller packages or books of leaf.
packaging: Please see packs for genuine 24kt Fine Goldand 23kt gold leaf products. Gold Flakes are available in plastic units containing 1 gram, 5 gr, 10 gr, 20 gr. Gold Powders are available in jars containing 5 gr, 20 gr, 30gr, 70 gr. Custom-sized units are available on request.

particle size: Measurement of the diameter of particulate matter in microns or millimeters. GoldCosmetica Essentials Flakes measure about 2.5 mm (.098") and Essentials Powders measure about 425-600 microns.
patent leaf: Distinct from loose leaf, each leaf is adhered by pressure to its own extra cosmetic tissue before insertion into a book. GoldCosmetica 24kt Fine Gold for Facial and Body Treatment and 23kt Gold Leaf for Nail Care and Pedicure are made in patent leaf form for ease of application and precise control.
powder: Specially produced fine particles of genuine gold or silver; as part of the GoldCosmetica Essentials line, these powders come in a range of luminous gold leaf colors and alloys. protective coating: An acrylic lacquer or topcoat used to protect manicures and pedicures finished with 23kt gold leaf. Maintains a longer finish by resisting abrasion, washing and normal wear and tear, as for traditional nail treatments. shelf life The time within which a product should be consumer or used. GoldCosmetica products have a specified "use before" date on their labeling. GoldCosmetica Gold has 72months shelf life from time of manufacture. GoldCosmetica Silver 48 month after manufacturing date.
silver: In its pure form, silver is slightly less malleable than gold. It can be made into genuine silver leaf, flakes or powder and alloyed with gold to create different karats of gold leaf colors. Also used to produce GoldGourmet edible silver leaf products and Eytzinger's Crocodile leaf.
silver leaf: Made from genuine silver, thinly beaten silver leaf provides the basis for Essentials flakes, powders, MicroMesh It is available unalloyed as pure silver and alloyed with other metals to produce a range of gold leaf colors.
storage: Certain types of leaf are sensitive to temperature and humidity. Essentials Flakes and Powders should be stored at normal temperature and humidity.

variegated leaf: Available through Eytzinger's Crocodile and GoldCreative lines for art, architecture and craft projects. Imitation gold leaf or copper leaf which is special treated to produce a multitude of patterns and colorways.
24 kt gold: Pure 24kt Leaves available for Facial and Body Treatment. In general powder, flakes, Micromesh are not available in 24 carat; gold 24 kt is very soft and gentle and may stick together.
